on this subject. the gun lobby, the nra at least, in some ways is a victim of their own success. their political m.o. is to prevent anybody from even bringing up gun control legislation, to make it seem politically impossible to even broach the subject. and so they're not used to having the debate, their side of the argument, with powerful, motivated, organized proponents of the opposite view. in other words, they have been so successful at shutting down any possible debate over gun control in this country that they now seem legitimately surprised that there might be a legitimate debate in this country over gun control. their reaction today to their meeting with vice president joe biden in washington was that they said they were disappointed. that was their word, "dispointed," that one of the subjects of discussion was reforming gun laws. what did you think you were there to talk about? this is the list of gun owner groups and gun advocacy groups that vice president biden met with today. in this ongoing series of meetings he's having toward producing a list of recommendations that we now know will

the nra and representatives from the entertainment industry this evening. kathleen sebelius wills attend some of the meetings. it is a big step for president obama's new gun violence task force launched in the wake of the massacre at sandy hook elementary. but it did not necessarily leave many with high expectations. businesses that sell a lot of guns like walmart will also be in on some meetings. those groups are more likely to be influenced by the nra since they're making a big profit off those firearms. and they do not want to appear too entrenched in the white house's anti-gun push. >>> walmart says after the shooting, guns are now one of their highest-selling items. while it does want to help the administration, when that starts to contradict with sales that's where the help stops. the nra obviously has a lot of money and therefore a lot of power going into these talks but gabby giffords' new anti-gun group is looking to counteract that. she and her husband mark kelly kick started a campaign this week that they're calling common sense measures to curb gun violence. now, they're hopi

to hear from wayne lapierre, head of the nra and taking a quote, defiant tone, and prepared to attack not just the proposed assault weapons ban but the universal background check. he plans to go hard against that, as well. which is interesting, molly. that was the one proposal that folks thought you could get some support of both sides with a universal background check. >> i think it's still the case that you may see some support for -- from republicans for something like background checks. this is something that polls at 90% with the public as a whole but they're not going to have the backup of the nra and i don't think it's too surprising nra still opposed to any form of gun control. i actually thought that wayne lapierre's testimony which i have also seen is interesting because he seemed to back off some of the more incendiary rhetoric of other forums, most notably, the initial press conference lashing out at the left and the media and everybody else and peek like the hecklers in the hearing and don't speak for the republican party and don't speak for the nra but it's sort of a pie

guns in the wrong hands. the nra says it merely guards against frivolous lawsuits aimed at breaking gun makers. he joins us live in this exclusive interview. >> thank you. good to be with you. >> ted kennedy said this law was bought and paid for by the nra. in your mind, what was the intent behind this law? >> the time it was passed, there were a number of suits, predominantly by municipalities against the gun industry meant to attack against the sale of saturday night specials. the proponents of the law claimed it was designed to protect them from liability simply by making an inherently dangerous product. it was written much more broadly than that. the effect has been, when gun sellers or gun manufacturers act negligently, they're immune from any kind of liability. so you can have gun dealers turning a blind eye to the sale of hundreds of weapons to straw purchasers, and when those guns are resold or conveyed to people, criminals that use them to kill people, then they can't be held liable. that makes no sense. it's a protection not needed by the good actors and not deserved by the ba

many gun owners themselves. when you actually talk to gun owners and nra members, they support by large majorities sensible and strengthening the current gun laws. what they support, 82% of gun owners, 72% of members actually support universal background checks. we are trying to keep guns and weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, criminals, and the seriously mentally ill. when you talk to people in west virginia, gun owners themselves want to be able to have guns in their homes. they also want to ensure that those guns do not fall into the hands of people who should not have them. the other constituency that is important is law enforcement. they are unanimous in their support for assault weapon ban for capacity magazines and closing loopholes. host: gun control could split obama, reid. they say backing restrictions could hurt the senate leader and other democrats. this story points out that for some democrats up for reelection, supporting the president will be treacherous terrain. they go on to talk about facing reelection battles in states where gun control is politically unpop

it still works, and the notion that it just doesn't work -- this is one of the nra talking points. it's just fact rally false, and -- and again obviously, durbin's point that it's a deterrence to people to guy guns is also the obvious counter to that claim. but i come from a more rural part of connecticut, and obviously there are a lot of gun owners out here. background checks is just not a controversial item. >> stephanie: right, 92% of americans are for background checks, right? >> absolutely. and i have been meeting with police chiefs in my district lately, and they do the psi it will permit applications. and they have signing permits for people that they have no confidence that they really know their true nature. and that's the one item you hear over and over again. it extents not just to gun purchases but to gun permits, to have a stronger database of background checks. by the way it also fits totally within scalia's decision on the second amendment, so the notion that there is a second amendment problem, just read scalia's majority opinion. he explicitly stat

what the nra has been doing and i wish they had listen to the majority of their members that are saying we should have universal background checks. an awful lot of them are saying i don't need a large magazine. that's not what i hunt for. i have a gun home to protect my family. we're not taking any of that away. but there's still -- if you read the blogs and everything, i mean, what's being put out there is so far from the truth. but when you think about it, you know, what we're trying to do is holistically, we're trying to look at the guns that cause the most damage, the large magazines which obviously once you go over that 15, 20, 30, 40, up to 100, they say, well, that's taking away our right, but why did we ban machine guns? that's legal by the supreme court. i still go back to the supreme court which they seem to be ignoring right now, the nr a. they don't even want to listen to their own people in the supreme court saying that the municipalities and the sats have the right to make laws to protect their citizens. >> let's go to ron reagan on these thoughts. i want you to watch some
